I’ve been away from the blog for a couple of weeks since my unemployment began (apologies for my disappearing act, but I am now back!), and during this time, the idea of career vs life success came up again (surprise!). Being unemployed has kept the idea of life success at the forefront of my mind. A successful life is a happy one, and I know all about how losing a job can impact one’s happiness greatly.
People waste their lives in a job that society tells them they need to be successful, thinking “this is the dream”, but success always seems to be defined by money and status (not happiness) and if you’re living this “dream” but it does’t bring you happiness, is that really success?
There is a HUGE difference between career and life success; they’re not mutually exclusive. It’s important to know the difference, know what drives you in your journey, and figure out what’s most important for you. I’m hoping that the reason you’re reading this now is because you’ve figured this out already *wink wink, nudge nudge*.
So if you’ve lost your job (but even if you still have your job!), it’s important to know that…
Your job doesn’t define you!Yours truly (AKA Tara Thomassen)
What are your values?
Do you have passions?
What kind of person are you?
If you don’t know these things, then you’ve been spending too much time at the office.
Losing your job is scary (especially when you have the responsibilities of a mortgage and/or a family – responsibilities of which I know nothing about) but I think most people look at being unemployed as falling behind on their life plans. It’s not just about surviving financially for the newly unemployed, but it’s also “what about this holiday we planned to go on” (not that we can really holiday much in this pandemic but you get the gyst) or “what about the second child we wanted to have” or “we were trying to buy an investment property and now we can’t” or “we can’t afford to upgrade our car” or “we can’t move interstate”. These can all still happen! They just might not happen in the timeline you originally planned, and that’s okay! It’s not a race, there is no rush. You are on your own timeline.
I’ve truly come to believe that unemployment is a form of redirection. It’s outgrowing what you had and who you were to accommodate the new person you’re about to become. That’s certainly how I felt this round of unemployment. We spend so much of our time, living just to work; I want to work so that I can live! And now that I’m unemployed again I get the chance to reconfigure my life by enjoying just being alive!
If I had never found a way to have life success, I would have let unemployment determine my happiness. And with this, I leave you my last quote of the day…
If you lose your job and you’re feeling lost without it, then you lost yourself somewhere in your career.Once again it’s yours truly
